Bill's Blog - Monthly Summary

Hello!  Here's a summary of my posts from the past month.  I'm glad you're with me on the journey.  My goal for this journey through life is to "wake up, remember and come alive," and help others do the same.  So to that end, take what's helpful here and leave the rest! (Looking forward to reading some of your post comments as well.)

Love Does That (Meister Eckhart)

Love Does That (Meister Eckhart) All day long a little burro labors, sometimes with heavy loads on her back and sometimes just with worries about things that bother only burros. And worries, as we know, can be more exhausting than physical labor. Once in a while a kind monk comes to her stable and brings a pear, but more than …

Twisted Mouth

Twisted Mouth (Written by Surgeon Richard Selzer MD) I stand by the bed where a young woman lies, her face postoperative, her mouth twisted in palsy, clownish. A tiny twig of the facial nerve, the one to the muscles of her mouth, has been severed. She will be thus from now on. The surgeon had followed with religious fervor the …

Not a One!

Not a One! Chad was a shy, quiet little boy. One day he came home and told his mother that he’d like to make a valentine for everyone in his class. Her heart sank. She thought, “I wish he wouldn’t do that!” because she had watched the children when they walked home from school. Her Chad was always behind them. …

The Sweetness of Dogs (Mary Oliver)

The Sweetness of Dogs (Mary Oliver) What do you say, Percy? I am thinking of sitting out on the sand to watch the moon rise. It’s full tonight. So we go and the moon rises, so beautiful it makes me shudder, makes me think about time and space, makes me take measure of myself: one iota pondering heaven. Thus we …

God of My Future

“O, God of My Future:
Today, I dive into waters, unknown.
The sudden embrace of its cold startles me, awakens hiding fear.
I do not know about the next, or how it may be cruel.
I need your help, God.
To trust more than I doubt.
Rest more than wrestle.
I am afraid of the future. And yet, You are already there.
I live in the unknown. And yet, You live with me.
I want to dance where I now sit, scared, in corners.
I want You to see me, know who I am, recognize my inability to be anything but rattling bones without You.
I need strength. I need hope. I need promises. I need safety.
More than anything, I need to be able to face what I do not know with courage I do not have.
This, God, will only come from You.
So help me not be scared.
Give me eyes to see beyond the natural.
And when my flesh threatens to pull me under in the waters of fear, come with strong hands to bring me back to life.
Amen.”
A Puritan Prayer

Saint Francis and the Sow

Saint Francis and the Sow (Galway Kinnell) The bud stands for all things, even for those things that don’t flower, for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing; though sometimes it is necessary to reteach a thing its loveliness, to put a hand on its brow of the flower and retell it in words and in touch it is lovely until …
