About ACIM – A Course in Miracles.

What in the world is A Course in Miracles?

Though people may explain it in many different ways, A Course in Miracles is simply what it says it is – a “course.”  It’s a unique and complete curriculum for spiritual growth and healing where fear based thinking is exchanged for love.  This shift in thinking and perspective and the behaviors that result from it – the expressions of love that inevitably follow – comprise the “miracle” that gives the book it’s name.  The Course speaks of Jesus and uses some traditional Christian language, but its message is universal and can be applied regardless of one’s formal beliefs.

My experience with ACIM:

Many Christians may question it but I am finding the Course deeply transformational and healing.  It’s simply spiritual psychotherapy – “spiritual mind training.”  It’s helping me to experience more deeply the love of God that surpasses knowledge (Eph. 3:16-19), transformation through renewing my mind  (Rom. 12:1-2), and how to love God, others, and myself in practical and powerful ways (Matt. 22:36-40).  And I just feel plain old happier, less depressed and more hopeful!

One of the amazing things I’m learning is that you do not have to believe it, understand it or figure it out but just use it, practice it and apply it in order to experience the truth of it.  There’s a statement I remember and like that says, “We can only possess what we experience.  And that truth to be understood must be lived.”  What I think we all want is not more knowledge about God, but a a deeper and more authentic experience of God.  And that is what God is helping me to experience through the Course.  And all I can say is that my desire for studying it more intently and thoroughly is intensifying becasue I’m experiencing the truth of it.

Here, on my blog, I’ll begin to share my reflections on and experience with ACIM more often as I experience the truth more deeply that God is love and  “Perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John 4:18).  A truth the Course echoes:

“The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught.  It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.  The opposite of love is fear, but what is all encompassing can have no opposite.”
