Laughter (by Hafiz)
What is laughter? What is laughter?
It is God waking up! O it is God waking up!
It is the sun poking its sweet head out
From behind a cloud
You have been carrying too long,
Veiling your eyes and heart.
It is Light breaking ground for a great Structure
That is your Real body – called Truth.
It is happiness applauding itself and then taking flight
To embrace everyone and everything in this world.
Laughter is the polestar
Held in the sky by our Beloved,
Who eternally says,
“Yes, dear ones, come this way,
Come this way towards Me and Love!
Come with your tender mouths moving
And your beautiful tongues conducting songs
And with your movements – your magic movements
Of hands and feet and glands and cells – Dancing!
Know that to God’s Eye,
All movement is a Wondrous Language,
And Music – such exquisite, wild Music!”
O what is laughter, Hafiz?
What is this precious love and laughter
Budding in our hearts?
It is the glorious sound
Of a soul waking up!
O God, help me to laugh more. To do whatever I can to laugh. I lose my perspective so easily. The burdens of life get me down and I forget to laugh, forget to find the humor in it all. Isn’t life too important to take seriously, as I heard someone say? I will trust in you.
Why do I take anything seriously? For I’m in you. I’m created by love, came in love, live in love, will die in love and return to love. There’s nothing that can take that away., None of my troubles, none of my problems. And I make so much misery in my mind. It’s amazing really, how much misery I can think up and make up. And it’s not just learning to laugh at all the things in life and thereby getting perspective, but there’s a deeper laughter still, isn’t there? I’d like to think that there was laughter among the Trinity in the act of creation. And I imagine that the first sounds after the resurrection, when the stone rolled away, might also have been laughter. At least I’d like to think so along with the words of, “Surprise!” Death overcome by life and love. What in the world do I have to worry about? Ever? So, live in freedom Bill and laugh. It’s a sign of faith, a sign of trust.
God if it doesn’t make you cry, it must make you laugh when you see how all of your children take it all so seriously and simply forget that we live in God, we live in love, we are held and there is nothing to worry about. For as Julian of Norwich says, “All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well because there is a love that flows through the universe, that holds us fast and will never let us go.” When I get that. When I understand that – then I can laugh and that laughter is the glorious sound of my own soul waking up, coming to awareness and living in God and even my laughing is my loving you.
