A Reflection on: “I Am Light.”
A beautiful song to help you remember who you truly are.
You and I suffer from spiritual amnesia!
We have forgotten who we are, why we are here and how to live a life that we would love and God would love. In part, our despair and depression comes from forgetting our identity as children of God.
You are not your pain.
You are not your past.
You are not your problems.
You are not your feelings.
You are not your thoughts.
You are not your insecurities.
You are not your nationality.
You are not your personality.
You are not your peculiarities.
You, and me and everyone else have simply forgotten who we are! You are the light of the world. Is that just a metaphor?! Or somehow does it describe the core of our being – our ultimate magnificence and brilliance as children of God? Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” And he said to his followers, “You are the light of the world.”
There can be no despair for the children of light. “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Clarissa Pinkola Estes says:
There can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours. They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.
– Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Read the entire article here – It’s short but wonderful! And here’s my 5 minute simple Sunday sermon about it here.
So for your meditation this week consider listening to this beautiful song by Indie Arie. And practice saying and affirming to yourself throughout the day, “I am the light of God.” Or even more simply and profoundly, “I am light.”
Lyrics:
I am light, I am light
I am not the things my family did
I am not the voices in my head
I am not the pieces of the brokenness inside
I am light, I am light
I’m not the mistakes that I have made or any of the things that caused me pain
I am not the pieces of the dream I left behind
I am light, I am light
I am not the color of my eyes
I am not the skin on the outside
I am not my age, I am not my race, my soul inside is all light
All light, all light
I am light, I am light
I am divinity defined
I am the God on the inside
I am a star, a piece of it all
I am light
